'FEEDING THE MASSES"

The vacuum of me

impalpable

taps small letters into space

pauses

sips on cheap champagne

still

a bubble is a bubble

icons only become moths

flash briefly

drawn to light

click

the recession

a flood of deficit

I am swimming

in emptiness

where did my lost words go?

they invert silence

become cataracts

louder in blindness

I bite my dry lips

hoping

there are words

in my blood.

And we all have to eat.

©l-j stockman 2009

.

"LAMENT"

Repress reaction calm,

let me pass by slowly though,

I gut myself upon your cross,

your veiled cliché your mantra,

how you wrenched darkness from light,

ripped song from my throat,

my throat he said a nightingale,

a moon tremulous and we impaled truth,

for crimson salt,

just so we could fingertip viscosity,

see how it beads and stretches,

into sensory string lattice

and on our tongues

a thousand words unspoken

unwritten because language bleeds into static,

embolism so easy to weave empathy from nettles,

to carve a meeting place

,

from pain but see joy -blinds us with the sunrise

sears our weeping wounds

rubs ashes into mouths that taste of midnight,

see the blue blue sky meet sea azure

into hope and your irises on firebursting into tomorrow

you cannot ride along this shore,

and gift me your tragedy,

I know all your words by rote.

by rote.

And from my lungs my eyes

from my yesterday

and my very womb

see here I birth you light,

I have no choice

I birth you hope into madness,

every day there is a new word for sorrow,

eventually they all sound the same.

"DIXON"

The convicted killer was found dead in his cell

cold in the grey light of dawn

tied to the clothesline

as a child he could only bark like a dog

when they took him into care

a seed grew inside him

the darkness whispered in his ear,

everything became 'them and us'

the institutions passed him along

from petty crime to hard time

he learned the ropes,

or else released again,

he drifted-

some would call him scum

his paranoia bled into rage,

when the Speed burst his brain

he didn't stop until the machete broke,

he left their severed hands on the floor,

10 bullets in the back of a passerby

national coverage of the police chase,

but he let his last hostage go free

within the psychosis find the killer

within the killer

find the man within the man,

find the child within the child,

find yourself.

Now make it better.

"THE MANY"

My demographic dwells unseen

the multitude a thick disguise

who will pluck these sour berries?

we cannot find our way

woven as we are into this tangled mesh

the silver-eyes swarm like bees

beaks as sharp as pencil leads

steal us in small mouthfuls

our faces press against the glass

our mouths open and close

but our voices remain unheard

we flicker like a school of fish

the opacity of history as viscous as glue,

and stiffening we are hardened into shapes

but they are not our own

we are the many, descended from the few

our lines are stretched across this globe

as tight as an empty belly

as lost as our ancestral memory

as hopeful as a one way ticket

we are the many, the haves who have not

yet my roots reach in two directions

they remember the pale shore

they taste the earth of my birthplace

they reach for the red water

are implanted in the black sand

the tears of greenstone sing to me

in words that speak my own name

I too have sprung from this land

I have wept like resin from the kauri

I have crawled from primordial swamp

I have been spewed forth from volcanic fire

I have formed in layers of limestone

I am buried like afterbirth within these folds

the bones of my ancestors lie like rocks

they make a spine and a belly for my arrival

they build a hearth for my fire.

I do not know their names but I know my own.

The Long Horizon

In the map of my heart

a tracery of directions

transcending time and distance

I place you there, Tim

in a dual universe

where bones can knit and heal

where pain undoes itself

and life flows backwards

into your breath

there is a long horizon

a sea of indigo broken by spray

we sit together on the cliff

amongst the nikaus

we both know the earth is round

the sky will not fall

the vanishing point

is not the razors edge

in the map of our minds

there are no directions

only pathways of memory

making doors that open and shut

releasing life in small bursts

the aroma of woodsmoke and coffee

the rise and fall of laughter

in a ramshackle cottage

between nikau and limestone

a panorama of blue and green

memory lets go of linear perspective

and it's not that far

as the crow flies.

L J Stockman

"DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS"

Let me be porous

my skin transparent

bones unlocked

let me be more

space than substance

let all flow

unimpeded

without residue

I am no filter

keeping secrets

of sediment

make me an ocean

without a shore

a night sky without stars

unoccupied.

the trade wind knows

there is no horizon.

"THE SOUND OF GOODBYE"

Strange how memory triggers,

like a cocked gun

when you thought the safety catch was on.

It stands to reason I suppose,

since light travels faster than sound,

that darkness does too.

I am sitting on the bed watching you share a needle.

Fascinated how the blood (yours?)

travels backwards,then forwards.

We all breathe a sigh of relief.

You two because you are fixed.

I, because I can finally get some peace.

The frenzy is over, your shaking subsides.

Desperation and colour drain from your face.

You lie tangled together,

I know you've been screwing her and I don't even care.

You told me once how she came into the room behind my back

and kissed you, tongue deep,

even though you'd just been sick.

I guess that was my cue,

yet somehow I just couldn't go.

Your slowly unfolding wreckage burns cold, a blacklight.

You are an outline in white chalk.

Amongst the stink of ashtrays,

the dirty dishes impossibly stacked,

you are Green Eggs and Ham.

You are Sam fucking I am,

and I do not like it.

Not in my brain

not in the rain,

not on my back or in your tracks,

I do not like your monkey habit,

I will not eat it with an addict.

There is a dull clink as the syringe hits the floor.

Your dog, neglected as usual,

whines and raises her head.

The next sound is the back door closing as I leave.

Bang.

©l-j stockman 2009

'FLEDGLING'

In my open hand

a featherless bird

a nestling,

naked in carmine filigree

beak gaping soundlessly

her throated heart flutters under my skin

I cannot return her

I cannot release her

below us broken shell

above us stretching sky

transfixed by indecision,

earthbound.

The Slow Show
God Only Knows
The Slow Show are a recently formed Manchester based band with a dynamic, warm, beautiful organic sound that has many references to American alt folk rock but with a distinctive Northern English touch. Their critically acclaimed debut EP Midnight Waltz displays their carefully crafted musicianship and lush melodic songwriting. The diverse instrumentation, in particular the use of a colliery type brass band sound, adds an extra dimension to their music. Drawing on a diverse range of musical inspiration you can hear influences from classic artists like Neil Young. Tom Waits & Bob Dylan echoing through out their music. The Slow Show have quickly built an excellent reputation for their live shows where they are often joined by their brass section and the occasional extra vocalist. Even at this early stage of the band's existence they have attracted enough attention to be asked by the BBC to perform at their Radio 2 In Session show supporting Elbow at Manchester Cathedral. added to station 2/14/2012 10:47:31 PM

Marky Quayle
Estate
The time is long overdue to hear a fresh voice that actually tells a compelling story by way of interpreting a great lyric—so welcome to the rich and engaging world of Jazz singer Marky Quayle! This San Francisco native is a compelling singer with a refreshingly velvet vocal sound who has absorbed what all great Jazz vocalists know in their souls: the importance of ‘owning’ a song and delivering its poignant story. Her tasteful and agile interpretive skills and natural sense of what it means to get inside of a lyric captivate her audience at every live performance and these qualities are amply demonstrated on her latest CD release So Lucky . . . to Be Loved by You. “ . . . she has that rare quality of being able to sing to, as opposed to sing at, you. Quayle's warm, husky voice . . . holds notes and phrases . . . to exquisite effect. Quayle is obviously comfortable in her own skin and her ease is palpable. You feel relaxed listening to her, as if she were an old friend.” —George Harris, of Jazz Weekly, 93.5 FM KFOX, for All About Jazz Marky remembers, “The earliest live music that I recall hearing was the Mary Kay Trio singing in my father's living room when I was six years old. It was unforgettable the impression their beautiful voices made on me! I knew from then on that I wanted to be a singer.” Marky's father was a great music lover and counted among his close friends George Shearing and Les Brown, who were his regular houseguests, with Shearing often playing on the home piano. With her Dad playing vocal recordings around the house whenever he was home, Marky recounts that she learned three-quarters of her repertoire by the time she was nine. Although as a teenager she listened to the rock bands that were active in San Francisco during that era, when a neighbor gave her an LP titled The Divine One by Miss Sarah Vaughan, it turned her musical life around. added to station 5/17/2011 1:29:22 AM

started song writing in 2005 and thanks to a brilliant songwriting group in Bristol run by the very wonderful Patrick Duff I wrote and recorded enough songs to release my first album Full Circle in February 2008. I'm now working on a second album to be released in early 2012. Many of my songs originate from African drum rhythms which I've studied and enjoyed for many years. added to station 4/14/2011 12:01:19 AM

Tania K
Wouldn't it be nice
Being born with talent is one thing. But in some cases, it almost seems genetic. This is one of those cases. Tania K., a.k.a. Lisa Dolton is an amazingly talented songstress from the United Kingdom, right on the outskirts of London. With a range that could rival that of all time greats, listening to one of her songs and closing your eyes could take you to a whole other world. Only to be snapped back to reality once the song is over, you'll be scrambling for the next song to start just to see where she takes you next. A multifaceted woman, she showcases talent in Classical, Jazz, and Soul, as well as Pop and R&B. added to station 8/21/2010 1:26:15 AM

Doc Killian
BOSS AND WORK ARE 4-LETTER WORDS
Doc Killian is a 50 year old factory worker who has spent about 20 years working in factories since he arrived home after spending 7 years as a U.S. Army Medic. A few years ago, his wife of 20 years talked him into listening to a bluegrass CD with the song ""Darlin Nellie Grey"" performed by the ""Stanley Brothers"". He liked the song so much that he was determined to learn how to play. So, he went and bought a banjo. While practicing daily, he started coming up with some tunes and lyrics to the some of the early songs he recorded. The banjo went on the shelf for a while so he could continue writing. While recording his first CD, ""The Factory Worker"", at WSDS Radio in Ypsilanti , Michigan , he met and became good friends with Bobby ""Swampgrass"" Anderson added to station 2/17/2010 9:29:49 PM

The day when I will fix iit all
entered music school in 1997 and started my course work with the piano as my first instrument of choice. I quickly started creating melodies that sprang from my imagination. I found my calling in music and began composing. Rather than pursuing the conservatoire where days were long and tedious, I decided to break out and pursue and independent direction as a performing musician. I do not like classical music. I was influenced by Madonna, but I was really impressed by “Boiler” by Limp Bizkit. The song really took me in the direction of rock and alternative. Other favorites are Linkin Park and HIM – “Rip out the wings of a butterfly added to station 4/25/2010 6:36:59 AM
