How does Comedy in music work for you?
OK, let's go with the most obvious question first.
* Your all time fave comedy performer and song?
* Have you made Comedy/Novelty songs and how did that go?
* Can Comedy/Novelty songs be taken seriously music-wise?
* Am I wrong or are their less Comedy/Novelty songs being made these days?

Hi Ladies First

1. Monty Python's Contractual Obligations album is pretty good.

2. I've made one or two. Here's the lastest: https://indiemusicpeople.com/songs.aspx?SongID=122993&ArtistID=143804

This track came about by experimenting with microtones. The result sounded kinda like a fly, and then the title Ezra The Crime Fighting Fly just popped into my head out of nowhere and I just ran with it. I honestly don't know where it came from or why.

3. All genres can be taken seriously music wise. It's up to the artist to make it work.

4. I see quite a few around here, not sure about elsewhere.

I used to be involved in a country/western comedy group called the Skating Dewberries and it may have been the most fun I ever had online. We performed on Second Life and always brought down the house.

Interesting comments and links, thank you.
The problem with making comedy songs is that you may offend someone, especially someone with a different sense of humor. If you make a youtube you have to declare that you are not 'putting words into someones mouth' by pretending to be them. It's a rather difficult line to tread these days.

All Time Fav. John Prine. "Please don't Bury Me" It will be played at my funeral .. Someday way off in the future.

Yes we wrote a song Crazy Like a fox in the country Category. Won a Kayak 2 years ago.

I think Comedy is good sometimes and just as much effort or more goes into IMO. Every line needs a Jest in it.

Yes you're right. Less These days.

Nice topic!

Some years ago my close friend and occasional co-writer (Harry Hamm R.I.P) on a song we wrote and recorded as a tribute to John Prine. We held John in hi esteem as we were mutual fans for years. The song that was inspired by John named "Beside Myself". This song was nominated in 2024 for best comedy song.

Thomas Lee wrote and recorded a very funny song, in my opinion, named "Dopefiend from Disneyland" which was awarded a Golden Kayak for best comedy song 2024. Tom is a close friend who moved to Wisconsin from Thunder Bay, Canada.

Stan, best friend of my youth, was a big John Prine fan.

I went to many John Prine concerts, when he played solo, and later when he got himself a rockin' band. In 1973, Stan and I and Howie meet him backstage.

At a concert in Boston, of all people, Tony Perkins ("Psycho" lead) was there cheering John on...

cheers,

That is awesome Steve. I attended 2 of John's shows when he was near by in Wisconsin. Both times with my buddy Harry. There was something very special about a John Prine audience.

My friend and fellow singer/songwriter Thomas Lee (LaBelle) who recieved a Golden Kayak for best comedy song 2024 wrote this song for a band (Fish On The Wall) from his hometown of Thunder Bay, Canada.. I have heard Tom perform this song live many times at venues he has played and It is a big hit always with his listening audience.

Good song Stanley. You could just edit this video by changing video's width to 560(or less) and it would NOT affect "the size of this page".

Anyway, here's another funny one from the past...

I must be getting old I remember Sheb's hit song you posted here on the radio . He also had many funny parody songs under his alter ego "Ben Colder". Every time I watch an old rerun of Rawhide I think of Ben Colder watching Sheb Woley as a cowhand. Check Ben out on many funny songs he released.

Thanks for the info on making Tom's video smaller. I will try. At the risk of not getting the video to the right size I have attached a link to him on YouTube.
