Cuss Words In Songs?
Light or dark?
Heaven or Hell?
Why are cuss words important to use in a song?

It expresses strong emotions. But it is so overdone now that, unless it actually serves the song, it should be avoided. And I didn't even have to say 'fuck' to convey that message.

I spend much of my time on another website (sorry) but most of the members there don't speak English. When I listen to their songs I don't know if they are cussing or not but the sound would suggest so.
Swear words were invented because of the way they sound, there's nothing evil about the letters, it's always how, when and why they are used.
It makes me sad that some aspiring song writers feel pressured into shocking the listener with graphic phrases and sick scenarios. But it also makes me sad that these words litter their speech generally so obviously they are expressed in their lyrics.
I never heard these words when I was growing up (yes, I'm that old) and I never heard them in songs at all. My sister, Jilly, will use the odd mild cuss word and also suggests that one might be coming up by extending the "F" sound then replacing it with something else so that the cussing is only in the mind of the listener.... if you get what I mean.

You know, Verity, I'm with you. I hear casual swearing at large in society and at work. I think Hollywood may be to blame. They seem to think that everyone, everywhere cusses. And people think that's how everyone talks. What I've noticed is that kids of a younger age hear older kids cussing, and they think it's cool because they're getting away with it. Being cool is so important to young people that they start cussing, too, because it makes them feel older. But people used to grow up and then use grown-up language. Now, they use what I consider childish language. It rarely adds to, or elaborates on, or describes what a person is trying to say. Cussing is a kind of verbal crutch when you're too lazy to come up with a better word. There are over a million of them.

I don't do it often but when I do I do it for dramatic effect. My most recent upload "Run Motherfucker Run" (A Hip-Hop Holloween Tale" has several choice F-bmbs in it. Not a song meant for children or the Polly Pure breads of the world. But was a lot of fun to produce because I got to sing and say Fuck a lot, A very unique recording session indeed.

It's a big part of my vernacular so why not use it in songs? I'd edit it if I thought I had a nationwide hit single on the rise. ha ha

Nope - I provide wholesome original music to be enjoyed by anyone for a lifetime. Why ruin it for the vernacular ruminations of a sweat stained fat man sitting on a bar stool? Let him fall in silence. Wow is all I will say.

but why would any songwriter not use the language they use in their day-to-day life?

As a musician with 5 kids it never seemed a good idea to swear in front of them, so we would never swear when playing live. However we do have a line "You must be shitting me" in Plan B which is I think appropriate in the song story.

They ain’t… but this ain’t the 60’s anymore, where the word “hell” could barely be used on TV.
I use a few “fucks” for emphasis…

Yeah we'll use a few for emphasis as well and by a few we mean upwards of 30 but maybe the best thing to do is just post this and let it speak for itself.

Why alienate a percentage of your audience. Your song could be great but if no-one opens it because the title puts them off seems like an own goal. Surely there are enough words to use without copping out and resorting to shock tactics or pointless fillers. But I'm probably not the kind of listener you're trying to appeal to.

Well that probably comes down to the artist's perception of who their audience is or maybe they don't use that at all when creating. Some artists set out to create something popular to achieve some kind of effect of success, others, and this more describes me, try to express, purely, period.
