There are far too many veterans who served in the defence of our countries and have a hard time readjusting to civilian life. Some even suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression and even thoughts that lead to suicide. Whilst most nations have a Department of Veterans' Affairs (or an equivalent) that supports those who have served in the defence of their countries, some Veterans still fall through the cracks and end up on the streets. This song is dedicated to those brave souls and was written to highlight their plight. I salute them all.

All Lyrics and Music by Mike Dooner

Sitting on the pavement
Watching the passing cars
Staring with amazement
At restaurants and bars.
He's not eaten all day
And he can't remember when
He had a safe place to stay
Or when he will again.
His upturned cap is empty
No money for food tonight
No cents not even twenty
There's no end to his plight.

He wants no money for a drop
Nor cash for a smoke
Just for somebody to stop
And help a starving bloke.
Life’s as hard as it can get…..
For this brave, broken Vet.

He once was a soldier
Fought a forgotten war
He had rank on his shoulder
He earned respect and more.
But Civvy street let him down
And he could not forget
So he moved on from town to town
Taking any job he’d get
Now his upturned cap is empty
There are no coins in sight
He's not an alkie or a druggy
And there's no meal tonight.

He wants no money for a drop
Nor cash for a smoke
Just for somebody to stop
And help a starving bloke.
Life’s as hard as it can get…..
For this brave, broken Vet.

Both in my country and in yours
Doing it tough, some living in despair
All abandoned after the wars.
They fought for you and for me
For their country gave their all
Now many of them have PTSD
And many their backs to the wall.
Too many pockets are empty
Little or no food tonight
For money is not aplenty
There's no end to their plight.

He wants no money for a drop
Nor cash for a smoke
Just for somebody to stop
And help a starving bloke.
Life’s as hard as it can get…..
For this brave, broken Vet.
Life’s as hard as it can get
For this brave, broken Vet.
Life’s as hard as it can get…..
For this broken, lonely Vet.
