Simple Strand Of Pearl

I am Annie Avery
in 1894
I was born an only child
on Virginia’s Eastern Shore
the Autumn wind that cooled my skin
now chills me to my bones
and I mourn the sound of the wild geese bound
to their winter home

my husband was an oysterman
whose days were spent at sea
til they found him adrift on the evening tide
in the boat he named for me
I see him still, in the blue that fills
his great-grandaughter’s eyes
in a far-skinned girl with my red curls
we will both survive__I will survive

I hold the love of a simple man
in this simple strand of pearl
brought from the sea, in hopes that we
would sail off to see the world
but those lines were never cast away
those shouls have re-arranged
while he searched this shore, for one pearl more
I watched the seasons change

they come and go like hungry crows
shiney trinkets ‘neath their wings
I count them on this rosary
these pearls upon a string

a young girl glides on a sea of white
upon the frozen bay
but there will be no pretty spins for me
I’ll simply skate away… I’ll skate away
