Well, I’ve done my share of travelin’ ridin’ on the rails
Never paid for any journey, was never asked to pay
Whoever found me in a boxcar just knew why I was there
And if they happened to ask, I’d have a story I could share
I’d pull the doors wide open as we rolled through country towns
Wave to all the farmers workin’ up their land and ground
It’s like as if I knew them all and they all know me too
A special bond formed in seconds that becomes a part of you
I love the sound of those big steel wheels rollin’ down the tracks
Hitchin’ a ride in a boxcar all I own on my back
The whistling wind ‘n lonesome whippoorwills calling through the night
Like they’re singing just for me, everything’ll be all right
There’s a special kind of loneliness that warms the heart
I found it ridin’ on the rails when my life had fell apart
I’d play a little tune to that railroad melody
And find beauty in the moonlight shining down on me
Well, there’s nothing more I need than another rail to ride
There’s not all that much I need to be happy and survive
