Unexpected events are effective because horror games players cannot easily prepare for them. A light suddenly going out, a door opening by itself, or an enemy appearing in an unexpected location can interrupt the player's sense of safety. These moments are especially effective when the game first establishes a calm environment.
Storytelling helps horror games create deeper emotional experiences. Instead of simply placing monsters in dark locations, developers can use documents, environmental clues, conversations, and character backgrounds to explain what happened. Discovering the story gradually can make the game world feel mysterious and disturbing.
