never put your music on any of the rip off music site like spotify, Check this out

This an article written by Bill Lonero, one of the artists who was featured on Fret net Radio Australia along with me, "Ahedarexia" The name I went by then, & other guitarists. https://www.fretnet.com/playlists_20031228.html

Now let’s look at my version of “Amazing Grace”. With over 27,653 streams from July 1st, 2019 to September 30, 2019, I received a whopping .34 cents.
60.8% of all music on Spotify has been played less than 1,000 times. That means the average artist is making far less than minimum wage. Meanwhile the CEO of Spotify….
stole
Daniel EK CEO of spotify stole $3.8 billion dollars from the artists on spotify.

Just like the crap youtube pays the artists they rip off.

I found out for myself what Spotify is. We sunk money into promoting there but it's basically just a site for artist exploiters to make money selling playlist placement.

Need I mention my co-founder Dave basically invented online music stations and every site that copied that owes us a royalty.

Well, Wes, it's nice to agree with you for a change!

I got caught up in the distribution game years ago, and it surely didn't pay off for me. Other than simply having my name on another list, all of that is useless.

I never bothered with spotify and there ilk never thought it was worth my time. I played when live music was a thing and you could get steady bookings. You actually got cash on the night if u did the door it could be very generous. If the band was smart u took what u would expect and plough the excess back into the band. No internet, promotion was always key flyers posters and stuff. Getting a word of mouth thing going on. When ur young you can smash it for days. I played in 4 bands at once i managed it just. Trying to remember over 100 songs was quite hard to start. It was more like 200. Most nights no mistakes because i practiced a lot still do. If i made a mistake the night before it would not happen again. I would be cursing myself and no-one had even noticed even the band i did though. It was never about musicianship anyway it was a show for the dough.

I started a indigenous music station on spotify featuring our own Haida Gwaii peoples from British Columbia and it has over 270 listeners so there that, it also features other peoples from across North America and in doing that I have garnered plays of my own music, as well I get emails from fans who follow me there, so I aint in it for the money, i am in it for my fellow humans and to show the different music from our peoples who roamed this land way before we landed here via our fore fathers

There are always drawbacks of course but being in the promotions business for over 24 years it has benefited me immensely to be on spotify for myself and for others that I can feature and those whom I have promoted via my Voodoohead Productions business

That's nice for you Bryon, but there are lots of artists that would like to make money off their music & I agree with them 100%. To passify the fact that they are being ripped off by the greedy isn't a good thing! I know that independent artist don't make hardly shit on the music, but it makes it worse when you have greedy wolves screwing you in the back & they should be paying you fairly for you music!

Well Wes, there is more I would like to share

I was doing pretty well on spotify payouts with my classical songs and ambient works as well as me being considered an independent with no representation from an label, So what happened in 2024 the Spotify head honchos decided to change the system and eliminated those categories from being able to have much in the way of collecting "royalties so to speak or pay for the streaming from fans who listened to our , my music.

So yes, it was a disappointment and an unfair decision which myself and many of my fellow classical ambient and independent artists got zero to paltry amounts since

"The changes were designed to eliminate payments for tracks with low engagement and to reallocate that money to more popular, "functional" content producers, and professional artists"

So there you have it, yes, I was very disappointed with that decision as many of my classical musicians were being categorized as nothing more then independents ( we are professionals) yet in the eyes of Spotify we were expendable and so, less monies or nothing for all the efforts we did to record our works which are in my opinion as good as those who are signed with labels and deemed "more" professional

Yet I accepted that, its the way it is, unfair yes, yet its what it is.

I still do collect Royalties from all my works from my Performing Rights Organization at SOCAN (CANADA) and (BMI my rep in the USA) who collect monies from the various organizations that either use our music. SOCAN collects fees from radio stations, television, streaming services, jingles (commercials) used in various places and other organizations ( I have had my music used at ICBC an insurance company that play my songs while people wait on the phone to get help for car theft, car accidents etc) So I still receive some remuneration for what I have published online and so on

So you are right that Spotify are not doing us justice, especially us as independents, we deserve better, yet, this is the way it is, maybe in the future it can be addressed and corrected

So I just take it all in stride and am thankful I have the abilities to write perform and record music, firstly for the love of doing it, and secondly to maybe bring some joy to people who listen to my music , the few that they are, I am thankful for that

cheers and best wishes to you

bryon

Kind of figured that's the way it worked there, never had a desire to deal with any of those, "so called music distribution sites" Learning early on how crooked the record labels are, had a lot to do with my decision! People have been shown, that the only music or artists that matter are those spawned by the record labels! The difference between independent artists & major is the money dumped into the artist or band, the top notch recording equipment & professionals who groom the artists or bands the way they they want them to be & the money power they have with advertising, promotions & connections they have with the radio stations. I still believe they use payola to bribe radio stations to play the artists they want promoted the most, top 20.
Lot of bands here where I live made it big back in the day including my brother who was offered a contract by Capital records to release his double sided 45 record back in the mid sixties! , but the engineer who recorded his songs was from LA, started a record label here & had good connections with Capital records & that definitely helped my brother & his band! Investigating major recording artists back grounds, a lot of the time will mention that someone in the band had connections with the record labels, like Smashing Pumpkins, even the Beatles, who were sloppy on stage & unprofessional until Brian Epstein, shall we say, groomed them with he suits & the German fashion female hair stylish, gave them the idea of combing all their hair down the same way, which started the hair look!. I noticed Pete Townsend & Janice Ian are on here now, which shows you that once you are no longer a money making act, you are dropped by the labels & become an independent artist once again. If you are not in it for the love of making music, then you are in for a sad reality. & I hope the youth get that message.
Cheers Wes

Townshend was actually active on this site and championed it to the outside world for a few years along with his better half Rachel Fuller. I got to give him a Golden Kayak award. We had an excellent artist here who went by the name Back Bone Shiver whose entourage was mixing it up with Pete and Pete invited the guy Spenny onto their underground video podcast.

Janis Ian came with this one indie distributor who brought a number of name acts here. We have a bunch of them here, most can be found on this station, all have different stories of how they ended up here.

I remember the audio recording of Pete and his partner acknowledging and appreciating a golden kayak or something of the sort from here. Obviously hesitant since he is not an independent musician, but incredibly down to earth and validating to hear.

yeah that can be played on the Scott Stambaugh page.

Sometimes people used to get pissy about who is an indie and who isn't. I have always subscribed to the idea that indie is about the spirit of the deal.

I think they are an amazing band, Bryon. Progressive, microtonal, futuristic, Intense visually. They remind me of Devo when they hit the scene. I saw Devo at the Starwood before they were famous. Angine de Poitrine is the new Devo!

You can see by Rick Beato's face that he can't believe what he's heard. Rick is a smart guy, he knows what sucks & what is good. But he also knows what to say that won't bring on more complainers & haters. This kind of stuff belongs on a children's puppet show, it will do nothing more than definitely keep their attention.
KEXP up in Seattle has always been about weird & bazar music, if you wanna call it music!

I watched that Rick Beato video twice now, and he sounds like he likes them a lot. I know I do! They get better with every pass. They are actually geniuses. To make an impact right now with all the music that comes out every day, you need to be unique. The costumes, the made-up language, supported by genuinely good progressive microtonal music, put these guys at the top of my list of best new bands.
