Neil Young and Crazy Horse play a show. (The little Jahwah monk guys from
StarWars are stage hands.)
FM radio goes Stereo.
Black Sabbath releases Never Say Die.
The Wiz hits theatres nationwide.
Nigeria gets a new National Anthem.
Archie Bunker is diagnosed with Liver Cancer.
Nicole Atkins is born.
This may be a recipe for a psychadelic poem of the American experience
for many a twenty-something. It's no wonder then that Nicole Atkins
has written her first draft of her feelings on growing up in this
bittersweet world of real and make believe. We see Cartoon flipbooks,
sour candy, and the ebb and flow of shark river outside her front door
along with the coming and going of characters both real and imagined
that influenced so many of us as we grew to seek out the new and
rediscover the old. Nicole's music is a blend of the decades and an
expression of the images that many of us share in our memories. Both
playful and tragic and never cynical. She draws upon the documents
left us by heroes such as roy orbison, phil spector, nina simone, the
kinks, david lynch… as much as her own experiences learning from the
new heroes like stephen malkmus, the sundays, ... The result is
something that has already led a few journalists into the world of
poetic prose in order to capture their experience of her first record
entitled ""Party's Over.""
Nicole's presence as a performer is very much in tune with the history
which her music encapsulates. Songs about adolescence, love, death and
the search for some sense and meaning where they seem hard to find are
presented in a birds-eye view, as if we were looking and remembering
together.
