UTAH is a state of mind. Powerindie from the deep of weltsmertz to the top of ‘in your face pop songs’, with an excellent band and a remarkable voice.
It is amazing how the band has grown into one of Denmark’s strongest live acts. Jesper Both undoubtedly has what it takes to fill the stage and the band is just on the rise, getting tighter and more confident.
Its hard to believe that these guys came straight out of the rehearsal room les than only 2 years ago and played, with their nerves wrecked from thinking about performing in front of a big crowd, at VEGA in Copenhagen.
The 7 tracks on www.UTAH.dk are being played persistently with great feed back from the listeners. Since September 2004 up till now the tracks ‘Crash & Burn’, ‘Alien Battle’ and ‘New Boy’ received outstanding reviews at the US site www.garageband.com. The listeners gave it such good credit, positioning the different songs as Track of the day, Track of the month in both the indie, rock and alternative categories, honouring UTAH for their creativity, sound, instruments and outstanding vocal & mesmerising lyrics - and is still holding their position with 3 tracks in the top 20 charts till this date.
Given the strength of the songs and the serious live reviews, the American acclaimed prog-rockers Paucity generously invited UTAH to tour with them through Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Washington, Philadelphia and NY City. And at this state, a couple of American record companies have given their interest in recording and releasing UTAH in the states. The internet is indeed a powerful tool, combined with a strong tune.
Growing out of the soil of Skanderborg, Denmark, with out a clubscene, but with a ever growing festival, that has expanded drastically from a small hippie-festival in the woods, to one of Denmarks best brand festivals, besides Roskilde Festival.
At the same time UTAH have had time to focus on their own music in their own studio and rehearsal room – spawning into more than just a band from the backwoods.
The lead singer, Jesper Both, practically came out of nowhere and fell into the lap of the rest of the 4 band members, only 3 years ago. Jesper had been composing and playing his songs to him self thru many years, not knowing that he was actually writing songs that would blow people away, if he just took them to the stage.
Drummer, Anders Rønne, met him at school and had a hard time convincing him to come down to his bands rehearsal room and studio, which they build themselves in an old factory in downtown Skanderborg.
Now, from the first chord that Jesper played on his acoustic guitar and started singing, everybody in the band where stunned by his powerful voice and the intensity of the songs he had been writing at home in his bedroom.
UTAH recorded the first handful of songs, in their own studio, with nothing more than a few ideas and technical skills. By chance, the band submitted a couple of songs, to the Danish highly acclaimed live competition Livecontest dk in 2003. After the qualifying live gigs, UTAH play their way to the finals at the capital venue VEGA. The buzz had rounded up a following and UTAH did not let them down. The judge and jury of Livecontest dk gave the first prize to another spectacular act, but the audience gave UTAH their votes, and UTAH came in second to – none – as the winning band broke up 6 month later, unfortunately.
When UTAH had their chance at the Danish talent festival SPOT10 in 2004, they practically blew the roof of, from a small stage in the foyer, with the famous live review “An ambush at high noon”, leaving the audience with their chins to their chest for days. A few days later UTAH agreed to sign up with the major Danish booking bureau Skandinavian as the number one developing artist of the future, amongst major established acts.
By now, some of the best interests in Denmark are behind this hardworking indie act. Everybody who has been involved, ever since that day, are grateful to the rest of the band, that really made an effort of convincing Jesper Both to take his songs in to the public. Because the truth is, he never wrote the songs to no one else, but him self.
Even so, the demo is circulating slow, via word of mouth and live shows, becoming a collector’s item. And somehow, even though it’s ‘just’ a demo, the CD receives great reviews, in acclaimed music magazines, next to the established outputs.
It starts with a stream of conscience, with words coming to mind as you think them, creating fragmented scenery of the world, with all its guts and glory.
The lyrics are often commentaries to themselves, discussing the allegations that come to Jesper Both’s mind, reflecting on what could be behind it all.
Lyrically it begins with the classic ambivalences of love as in 'Is it over?' (Beaver) moves through every agenda of the world press to the break down of a rock icon, like Pete Townsend (Keep).
As a listener you will have to draw your own conclusions from the cut up lyrics, combined with your own situation or stand on the issues of the world today.
Some influences are more obvious than others, but among the major players like Radiohead, REM, Led Zeppelin and Smashing Pumpkins there is also a simple admiration for such alt-rockers as 16 Horsepower, Flaming Lips and Grandaddy. You go figure it out.
