In loving memory of Deborah Ellis 1967-1991. Her poetry to music

Words by Deborah Ellis. Music by Cary Kembla

HORIZON
The cliff is high and the drop is long
How is it then that the fall be so rapid
From the edge I see the horizon
And although I know not what lays beyond it
I wish I was there
Looking below the waves are rough
And the rocks are rugged
I know the only way to get anywhere
Is to jump and take a chance
I look around and back
See my life for what is was
I draw a blank
I look around and see what life means to me
I draw a blank
Knowing this I cannot understand
Why they make me stay
They say “Keep your chin up
Tomorrow’s another day”
I listen, I jump
I’m thrown and tossed
Then I swim and the water becomes calm
But as I swim
The horizon becomes no closer
I cannot reach it or swim beyond it
Never mind, I took a chance
I took a chance
I’ve sunk!
