In memory of Deborah Mary Ellis, 1967-1991. Her poetry to music

Deborah Ellis and Cary Kembla

The Moth and Light

The flame shines brightly for the moth that flies
It's as clear as the sun that shines in your eyes
As sweet as the honey that drips from the vine
As bright as a comet through its passage of time

But the moth cannot beat the indomitable light
With what strength it possesses it tries as it might
The light calls to the moth to come near and learn
All the secrets of life for your wings I'll not burn

So the moth did believe the lies of the light
And for that mistake it paid with its life
But as the moth died and dropped to the ground
It took with it the joy of the secrets it found

For although the light burnt and scorched and seared
It warmed and caressed the painful tears
So is all that is bad cannot be good?
For it has to be learnt and understood
That sometimes what hurts is by far for the best
And to this testimony the moth lies to rest
