Two chords, two descending melody linesone of the simplest songs I have written. The lyrics don't constitute a message but rather express without judgment a desire to be free without respect to consequence.

words and music by Scott Moses Murray

"I've been punching the clock, just not as hard as it's been punching me." The first verse came to me in the car, and for a year I couldn't figure out where to go with it. I finally decided to let the end of the first verse be a refrain: "Not looking to be forgiven, just to be released." I wrote several verses ending with that phrase, each verse giving the refrain a different point of view, depending on whether its subject is a lover tired of parsing anymore who is right and who is wrong, a nuclear bomb, a famous brow-beaten husband who "went to hell to get away from Jezebel", or finally an hourly worker whose "debt is piled to heaven."

The difference between our love and prison
Is behind those bars some men are innocent
I'm not looking to be forgiven
Just to be released
Didn't meant to burn you dear
But I can hardly see from here
The skies are bright and clear but I'm a million miles away.
Little boy went out to play
In the belly of Enola Gay
Not looking to be forgiven
Just to be released

Jehu slew the Israelites
Didn't care if it was wrong or right
There was an omen in his chariot's flight
They just read it the wrong way
King Ahab went to hell
To get away from Jezebel
Not looking to be forgiven
Just to be released

The day slips slowly by
Time takes so long to die
I been punching the clock
Just not as hard as it's been punching me
Roll the die, pray for 7
God my debt's piled to heaven but
I'm not looking to be forgiven
Just to be released x
