“Our America” Rod Washburn
4/19/2009 (original thoughts and lyrics, on flight between St Louis & Hartford)

one day like the rest, felt a bit second-best
not feeling very well at all
I started off on my way, covered myself in grey
walked the world like a ghost alone

and it’s hard to really know, when you’re born in America
just like your father & the one before
we tend to believe, when we’re made in America
that we will have our day in the sun……...

and then there was she, pretending to be,
but the darkness surrounded her eyes
not much like the rest, daughter of the Midwest,
the girl with such hope in her eyes

and it’s hard for her to know, she was raised in America
held on to everything she’s ever known
through stories told, about starting America
she questioned everything, but nothing at all

better believe we can do most anything, that’s what our grandfathers said
as they worked ‘till their death
you don’t know, how good you got it kid
you’ve got all that you want
cuz of what we did

Sunday morning’ writing songs, flying above the clouds
while my country passes under me
no rights and all wrongs, just bitter in song
I carry it so close to me

I guess you outta know, when you live in America
just like your son and the wife before
be hopeful & strong in Obama’s America
where anything can happen afterall

we’ll just be tough, cause we talk like American’s
like it’s our right as a native son
you better know if you fight for America
die for America, it’s our America….
you might die in America
