The Cowboy

We invented the wheel
Crucified our saviors
Praised the pointless
Punished the losers
Crowned the kings
Then blamed them for sinning
And cast out truth
When it wasn’t winning

Tore at the masks
That hid our faces
Then sharpen the knives
That cut out all traces
Of the guilt we share
Yet refuse to acknowledge
Believing there’s power
In passing out privilege

Denounced the cowboys
For not playing our game
Then suffered amnesia
To forget the pain

It’s trust we lost
As we waltzed through the carnage
Of the mangled souls
That carried our baggage
There’s no one left
To tell the story
The future stands
As the final jury
Dealing the questions
That indict the guilty
As we stand alone
Like the cowboy

Denounced the cowboys
For not playing our game
Then suffered amnesia
To forget the pain
