The Prelude

On Sunday morning I woke up and saw that it was noon
The dullest light of winters days comes much to bright and much too soon
My eyes were not accustomed yet and neither was my head
And I don't know why I did it but I sprang right out of bed

I had left the front door open in the drunken blur the night before
Had to light a blazing fire to stop me freezing any more
I poured a drink and had a seat beside the licking flames
And I don't know why I did it but I fell asleep for days

And you can find me blowing on the wind
When the dust and dirt get in your eyes you'll know it's me again
You can find me floating in your drink
When you throw it down your neck tonight then of old me you'll think

The neighbours knocked, the door was locked. They couldn't break the old thing down
Called the fireman, he was late, there's nothing that he could do now
Left me in my fiery tomb and all they ever found
Was a pile of ash there on the hearth where I left sleeping sound.

The wind came in and blew the ash right out the door and all about
The neighbours weren't so sad because I saw their eyes as I flew out
I'm doomed to race right on the breeze until I find my place
And until that day I'll have me way just blowin' in your face.

And you can find me blowing on the wind
When the dust and dirt get in your eyes you'll know it's me again
You can find me floating in your drink
When you throw it down your neck tonight then of old me you'll think

I've seen the lads in the next street and watched them as they dug their graves
Heard the neighbours talk about the man next door how he behaved
I've seen the sky. I've seen the sea, I've seen the rotten soil
Where they would've buried me and I could've dug for oil

I always had a dream that I would go and see the world some day
Couldn't get up from the chair where I watched the time waste away
And when the wind dies I know where I'll take eternal rest
In the ruins of my old home, back where I can feel me best.

And you can find me blowing on the wind
When the dust and dirt get in your eyes you'll know it's me again
You can find me floating in your drink
When you throw it down your neck tonight then of old me you'll think. x
