Lyrics Fred Dawson

Hannibal

I lost my way in eastern Missouri
comin’ from the West.
Followed my nose down the old Mississippi
‘til I wanted to rest.
Drove up to a sleepy little town
just before the sun went down
in another world.

The lazy streets still wind
above the muddy river.
Scruffy kids still find
the mysteries in the hills of Hannibal.

Spent the night walkin’ through Hannibal
thinkin’ again
about the man who came from Hannibal
away back when.
In the misty night I thought I could hear
the voices of children playin’ near.
Not a soul around.

The lazy streets still wind
above the muddy river.
Scruffy kids still find
the mysteries in the hills of Hannibal.

Drifted out, it was just about dawn.
Had a high-runnin’ tide.
Same old raft slowly cruisin’ along,
river same as the sky.
Well, I don’t know, I might have been reborn
comin’ back on the blast of a horn
through the crack in the world.

The lazy streets still wind
above the muddy river.
Scruffy kids still find
the mysteries in the hills of Hannibal.
