Beacons
Snow blowing hard, just a couple blocks to go
before she drops through the hole in the street
to the frozen cavern, screeching brakes below.
In the middle of the night she always finds a seat
on her way to the emergency room where she never knows what’s next,

Life and limb flying in all directions.
Just another night on the holodeck,

Steel will, steel nerves, that’s all it takes,
swimming against the tide to the edge of insane
way out past where it’s make or break.
Sometimes in the emergency room you don’t want to know what’s next,
when there’s nothing left but hope and you’re choking on death.
Flying through these city skies it’s a beautiful sight,
beacons to ten million lives lighting up the night.
