A GIRL LIKE YOU is a great opening track. John wanted to do a swinging/surfin’ number as an upbeat version of early guitar instrumentals he used to learn from The Ventures or The Pyramids - songs like Pipeline, Walk, Don’t Run or Penetration. In his demo, he originally used “a girl like you” in the refrain and I liked it. So, I just filled in the rest of the blanks. It evidently was easier back then to do a key change than write a Mid-8 break. ...
