Two sides to creativity.

Two sides to creativity.
I have found that creativity seems to have two sides to it.

1.) The fun part: (aka First Create). Here are some word that fit here: Desire, inspiration, initiation, frenzy, passion, delight, newness, insight, etc.

2.) The work part: (aka Second Create). Here are some word that fit here. Responsibility, effort, diligence, practice, continuity, marketing, familiarity, etc.

My opinion:
To make our creations manifest in the world requires both an awareness of this situation, and acceptance of it as well.

As Henry Miller said:
"The acceptance of any situation brings about a rythmic impulse towards self expression".

Most of us find it much easier to simply focus on the 'First Create' and lose the plot when it comes to the 'Second Create'. We want our creations to become known and recognised but we are not willing to put in the extra effort necessary to 'make them known'.

That is something I have found personally for years and it has not been until recently that I have had a desire to make an effort with the 'Second Create' phase.
I also think it is a lot easier for us as humans (I'm at least part human!!) to take on the challenge of the 'Second Create' when we have somebody to share that phase with.

I think that is why, especially for solo artists, it is important to surround yourself with like minded people.
Fortunately, we have a lot more options open to us in this day and age and IAC is one of those options.
Of course, special connections with special people are irreplaceable and that is what forms the nucleus of some of the greatest songwriting collaborations on the planet.

Most everything I write is improvisation and off the top of my head, especially the solo piano stuff. For me it's all about the moment. Once I record something I don't redo or retake because for that particular creation, the moment has passed.

Great thread!

I like to create just that way too! The passion and intrigue of creative exploration is one of lifes greatest gifts to us. The first create is what pulls us into art.
The need to do it more often is the seed to show that courage, determination,
and ethics are the way to manifest our creations for our brother and sisters.

The "Second Create" is definitely enhanced the the attentions of another who shares the creative passion, or simply wants to be helpful to someone they care for. The IAC community is a really a dream to us who have felt isolated for so many years. At age 57, I have struggled with this for most of my life. Being somewhat of an iconoclast has been problematic for me as a musician. Finding our audience is why IAC is so important to us independent artists.

i love that Miller quote ... i had just figured out the other day that for me it's not the acceptance itself but the process of metabolizing feeling and experience that impels toward self-expression ... the metabolized product that i can see/hear/feel is what allows me to accept the original "situation." i've converted something i can't otherwise make sense of into something i can aesthetically appreciate. it wraps it up, contains it.
first and second create occur simulataneously, confluently ... alongside the joy and play of creating is the sense of responsibility to uphold the authenticity of the idea and to metabolize it in a communicate way.

Great comment! I identify acceptance with the metabolism and experience that you mentioned. It is an internalizing and recognition that it is safe for us to express ourselves. Thanks fo the nice words !

I have a favorite artist, the late Bob Ross , a fantastic oil painter. He refered these things that happen to us as "happy accidents". And I like your story alot! Input for artists is where we find it. I comes from anywhere, we just have to accept it as such. Thanks!

Great words, Loren! I agree, I feel like the "Second Create" involves not second-guessing our " First Create". That must be respected and preserved. Those are our moments of magic.
