Election 2008 - Song Donkeys and Elephants
I’m a white male, US Air Force Veteran and college graduate. I’ve worked in the private sector for over 20 years for large corporations in management positions. I’ve been brought up with a mind set that you should hire and promote based on achievement and not discriminate based on race, religion or gender. During my career I have led many diverse teams and have always adhered to this philosophy. I would like to think that some of the minority candidates I have hired and promoted have carried this same mind set with them as they climbed the corporate ladder.

I’m very disheartened that African Americans are united and voting based on race and not issues. This is a slap in the face to all of us who have worked over the years to overcome racism and believed in the various programs that supported that means to an end. I don’t know if I’m alone but no matter who wins the damage has been done in my opinion. The fact that across all parties 97% of African Americans are voting for Obama is not a healing point for our nation. We’re going backwards with the racial issues exposing themselves in a new way.

The media is a disgrace for their biased reporting during the entire election. Exposing this issue has been treated as politically incorrect and suppressed in the media. The media’s only concern is with ratings and sensationalism. It’s a shame and dangerous that the media now controls who gets elected in our political process.

What is most interesting is that anyone would be surprised, bud.

I'll take things a little step further ... after raising 7 kids of their own, my parents took on a couple extra kids to feed ... so I've Black and Puerto Rican half-brothers.

Strange for a pair of conservative Republican parents, huh?

As consequence, I find it interesting when white folks are amazed that they seem to flourish in predominately white business environment whilst making allowances for others. That's not anti-white by any stretch of the imagination ... only making a social point.

When all one's friends are in control of the means, then who knows whom ... when having a friend can advise:

"Hey call so and so" etc ... in one's greater network becomes a factor ... to whatever degree ... of economic success.

There is absolutely no judgment being delivered here ... only attempting to flatly lay out a thought to consider ...

So:

Say you're black and you don't know anyone w/ true "means" ... no one who has hiring capabilities ... for none of your friends have been hired by major corporations or has any position of influence... their all janitors ... if you will allow for illustration ... you've got absolutely no network to speak of ... you're just a good Joe ... yet you've not any access to the greater pipeline for opportunity because you were raised in a backwater that didn't have any connection.

You then are fucked by circumstance ... and good luck to ya. You might do well, but the odds are stacked ... because you've no access that others in communities might otherwise have.

Folks in Greenwich CT have other opportunities than folks in Buloxi MS have ... is all. To deny that is to deny reality. They are VERY different communities with VERY different career paths.

It's interesting though ...

The same complaint btw ... has been artists' complaint against the "system" for YEARS! Who hasn't heard the axiom: "It's not how good you are, it's WHO YOU KNOW!!!!"

Same shit ... it is ... and to a certain degree ... it's true. It's all about access to the means.

It is, it always is ... that very basic human thing. We trust based upon who we think we can trust.

It is common to not trust people who aren't like ourselves.

Soooooo ...

When a black may get elected because there are a LOT of people who finally think they have someone they can trust in a position of power to help ...

Ain't no real surprise about that ... and I don't blame a single voter for it.

Best,

Kev-

btw ... I TRULY really didn't mean my reply as any criticism ... just personal musings on a subject near and dear to my personal observation of how things work.

I believe that the answer to the question:

"Why is the world more racist than me?" FAR transcends the "ME" thing ... it's more the world thing ...

Hence, people voting as they did fully agrees with the way that I view the world ... and although I might be aware of such ...

Well ... consider what the U.S. would look like if whites were in the minority ... and suddenly the minority became majority ... and how that power shift would affect the economic prospect of whites ... when historically ... the bias applied one way goes both ways ...

See above comment for what I think what would occur ... although I don't think the folks economically seated will give up their seats quickly.

... but things change ...

The Man With No Band

" It’s a shame and dangerous that the media now controls who gets elected in our political process. "

The media didn't elect our president ... the people did ...
As far as being disappointed in African Americans banding together ... Maybe the people should see the example ...
I don't believe they voted for Obama because he was black (Although that didn't hurt his cause) ... They voted for Obama because his platform represents change and a hope that he can help heal the wounds in the country, help bring all people together, and quite possibly help them get out of poverty ...

No disrespect to you or what you have done .... but have you ever had to live in an impoverished slum ? Have you ever been denied the right to vote ? Have you ever been made to give up your seat to a man of another color ?

You sound as if you've been slapped in the face ... That somehow these people owe you a debt of gratitude and shouldn't be given a chance to get on a level playing field with you ...

As Kevin pointed out, if the shoe was on the other foot, who would you have voted for ?

Your college education didn't make you very smart, Paradox.

How dare you come on here and declare WHY people voted the way they did. You're expressing a hostility that is steeped in race. In my opinion there's no reason any person who isn't wealthy should've voted for McCain, Obama was far more intelligent on all the issues.

Furthermore the media buried a lot of scandalous stories about McCain and Palin while every stupid rumor about Obama had its day. It's just a fact that McCain ran a foolish campaign and he and his running mate said a lot of foolish things and ran ads that were distortions and outright lies to play to the lowest common denominator of our society. Should the media act like he is brilliant and Palin is sharp? I don't think they could, they made their own bad impression, how can you blame the media?

Fact: You are just a sore loser and those are sour grapes. Get a grip.

Just to put things in context here:

in 2004 John Kerry won 41% of the white vote; in 2008 Barack Obama won 43% of the white vote

in 2000 Al Gore won 90% of the black vote; in 2008 Barack Obama won 95% of the black vote

in 2004 John Kerry won 58% of the hispanic vote; in 2008 Barack Obama won 66% of the hispanic vote

[Statistics as reported by MSNBC]

This is why Barack Obama is the next president. Don't cherrypick a statistic out of context and try to assert that the election results are somehow less valid because of it. The man insipired the country. He has a hard job ahead of him. Let's get behind him, and pull together as a country.
