Truth or Fiction or Fantasy ?

Are you a songwriter who usually writes facts, truth, personal experience, hope, fears etc or do you prefer to go down the fantasy road and create situations that relate to stuff you imagine?

Normally I/we draw on personal experience (as a trigger) but this last one (The Uglier Sister) is complete fiction as I don't have a sister and I don't work for anyone. It is fun to be a different person now and then however.

I just think of the lamest stuff imaginable and people seem to lap it right up. Being a product of ill-breeding makes that quite easy.., guess I got lucky.

Check out "Life Is So Hard" sometime.., perfect example.

I just write whatever pops into my head that seems suitable for public consumption and pleases me artistically. Of course, the subconscious controls the popping of the words. Sometimes it's pop corn! Sometimes it's true. If the words fit the song and pair well with the music, that's all that matters. When Bob Dylan wrote "Not Dark Yet" many critics thought he was either dying or suicidal. Apparently he was neither. He just likes to make stuff up sometimes that sounds true or personal. He's a wordsmith not a confessor.

Oh now that's an interesting question - honestly, some things that I write from the heart and believe to be true, people take for fantasy/fiction/imagination haha - oh well whatever works.

I agree with all those comments, I think the nature of artistically motivated people means that they can be moody, emotional, crazy, silly, defiant, imaginative and impulsive - all good reasons to write poetry and songs - we are a selfish breed I think and self satisfaction will come before being a crowd pleaser - I could be wrong
