Bad News/Good News and The Song of the Month: We're Out for Blood
Earlier editions of this blog can be found at www.xanga.com/mariancall.

Here's a love note from the road to everybody. It's my last night in California, and I have other work to do, but I cannot focux. Focus. Exactly. So I'll write to you guys instead. Blogs are (sadly) starting to substitute for the messages I'd like to send you -- my message volume is starting to get a little overwhelming. But you can know for sure that I read and love everything you send! Except Nargles.

I have always tried to see both sides of every situation, as best as I can -- which is why I doubt that you will ever hear me publicly endorse a political party, and also why I get that funny cross-eyed look when I'm making decisions. So this month I'm trying to see the good in all the potentially bad situations I've faced on this California tour. You, too, can try this exercise. It goes like this:

BAD: Having one's income tied to one's ear, nose, and throat health, which can make one feel like a spoiled diva at times.

GOOD: Sympathizing more with Pavarotti.

BAD: Going on tour and having no time or energy to book or publicize events, due to overwork and mild-yet-effective illness.

GOOD: Arriving at tour venues and realizing that if I'd had more events booked, I might have had to cancel some due to illness, which would have been terrible. (Besides, I've had great venues and audiences so far. Thank you guys!)

BAD: The common cold, much like certain friends and relations, can overstay its welcome and turn into the houseguest from hell after more than two weeks in close quarters. (At first, it was cute and we had fun together. I got sympathy and chicken soup and an excuse to sleep in. But over several weeks we've stopped talking to each other and started passive-aggressively refusing to do the dishes. Now I'm trying overt hostility in hopes that the cold will move out soon.)

GOOD: I worked myself into the ground as well as a very poor state of health, and having taken inventory of what led me to this point, I shall attempt a do-over, with more days off and spinach salads and fewer all-nighters and swiss cake rolls. But with the same amount of Awesome (and maybe more (pardon my impetuous capitalization, Disco)).

BAD: My guitarist, Joel, has moved to Santa Cruz. I have to get another one.

GOOD: My guitarist, Joel, lives in Santa Cruz, so I could tour the Bay Area without bringing someone new with me.

BAD: Getting departure/arrival time dyslexia and missing my flight back to Seattle.

GOOD: Delaying the inevitable and awful airplane trip for another two hours.

BAD: Another reason to hate airplanes, not that I needed one: it can take three days for one's right ear to pop after flying.

GOOD: It's harder to concentrate on my fear of flying when fear of eardrum discomfort overtakes said fear of flying. I was less white-knuckled and more yawning with vigor as we landed in Sea-Tac.

BAD: Still having trouble with the whole beer situation here. I've had some good stuff, but not on par with back home.

GOOD: I went into Whole Foods and got so happy about the produce section that I actually embarrassed my husband by jumping up and down a little. Well, a lot. Also: Thai, Indonesian, Mexican, Cambodian, Indian, Italian, Cajun, and Cuban food. And Happy Donuts. Yessss.

BAD: Occasionally sounding like a baby penguin while singing. Only less cute and fluffy. (Have you heard those things? Awk.)

GOOD: In the absence of fresh jalapeños to eat, I invented a home remedy for congested penguin-y squawks: 4 parts sweet chili sauce to 1 part tabasco. In a shot glass. Drink very quickly and repeat as necessary. Can be chased with milk to minimize contorted facial expressions. Effective for getting through second halves of shows and/or appearing to suffer for one's art. Also good for confusing bartenders when you ask for it. (Points to whoever names this disgusting medicinal drink

You certainly are a wordy bird, but ALWAYS an entertaining read. I'm sorry to hear that you're STILL sick. I haven't got a name for the concoction that you came up with, to treat the throat nasties, but if you call it the first thing that comes out of your mouth (while in the aftertaste-throes), it'll probably fit perfectly. As far as the W&W show- it sounds like yet another reason NOT to listen to broadcast radio. I may be a middle-aged white guy from Texas, but I have a very low threshold of tolerance for that kind of assinine repartee. They should've been fired.

...Also, it's good that you're seeing the good in the bad situations (it tends to make the bad items a bit more tolerable). Hope you get to feeling better. Incidentally, I already downloaded the laid-back version of "Out For Blood: (with intro) and can't wait to see the movie (I'm a B-movie freak).
