Getting signed....
I think due to the success our song Happy Faces has been enjoying (particularly in the underground 40 here) we're about to get caught up in a 'feeding frenzy' as the majors fight and bid for our services.

We are realists tho-so know there are many pitfalls to getting signed and (hopefully) becoming internationally famous and rich.Rampant egotism, delusion and terrible self-centredness being just a few...

We're determined not to let these things affect us and remain balanced, generous and humble as people..One of the things we've discussed is that we really want to 'put in a good word' with the majors about many of you here-particularly as a thankyou for voting for us and keeping us so high in the chart (please,PLEASE keep voting btw!).
.
Another thing we really wanted was to personally invite all of you( who havn't already) to listen to Happy Faces.Either to add to your stations or leave your comments, love and reviews in this thread.

This is both a way to give you all a sneak preview before we're signed so you can say 'i was there!' and our way of giving you all a huge 'Happy Face' too!!

Nice little number....."Happy Faces"

just remember the "majors" have to get "behind the band" otherwise you get signed just as a tax write off!

Dot the i's and cross the t's, read and re-read contracts with a good entertainment attorney.

Best of luck to you, hope it's a smash!

Larry

If Pegasaurus and Bub ever need a third, gimme a call. I'm usually to be found in the basement, but going upstairs is good exercise...

P.S. I notice you describe your work as lo-fi - are you sure you aren't using several of these with your Studer 24-track to get that lovely lo-fi tape hiss on your tunes?

Thanks for the happy face your blog gave me!

Larry n lace..Thanks for listening and adding us to your stations guys..You WON'T be forgotten when we're finally popping those champagne corks and signing on the dotted line!
All on this thread will be mentioned ay least once to the big guys-thats a cast iron guarantee.

Larry..This dude from universal has been hanging with us all last week. He's always saying 'lofi is the new hifi'-its his catchphrase. He's a rockin' guy-really hip n cool and he reckons we're gonna be huge.
He says there's no need to waste money getting entertainment lawyers anymore as that stuffs for the old days in the 50s and 60s when artists were ripped off.Nowadays record companies are much fairer (at least Universal is, he says) and they genuinelly have the artists interests at heart-its in their interest to look after us according to him..

He's so enthusiastic and says 'you guys'll LOVE L.A!'.He says its one-non-stop party there and you can get anything you want-ANYTHING!

I love how he talks about cracking different markets n conquering territories and is keen for us to make inroads into the U.S as soon as we sign. Its so exciting!!
Tell you the truth,i talked with Bub last night and we think we're just gonna sign-all that lawyer checking stuff is just a hassle n pain....Its a 5 album deal-with a $200,000 advance!
What could be wrong with that?
They're practically throwing money at us!

He says its an opportunity of a lifetime for us-and we shouldn't let it slip through our fingers....WE don't plan to!

Hugh..The Neve thingee looks wonderful-but why not just use real tape in the first place?
They want to market us a duo-but if we need a 3rd you're the man!

Thankyou for adding us to your station Silverwoodstudio. We love Bo Diddleys music. We'll definitely be putting in a good word for you with the big boys

My head is killing this morning.Brad(the Universal A n R guy) was showing us his favourite cocktail last night called a 'Witches brew'..vodka,2 part creme-de-menthe,one part pernod-then filled with orange juice. Finally a big spoonful of Liver Salts added to make it really fizz up(thats supposed to be the 'witches brew' part). Then you down it in one
It tasted disgusting, but we didn't want to offend Brad so ended up drinking about 6 of them-and i feel pukey this morning.
Brad and Bub are still sleeping

uh .. congrats on the success .... I don't mean to put a damper on your high note but ......
Nowadays record companies are much fairer (at least Universal is, he says) and they genuinelly have the artists interests at heart-its in their interest to look after us according to him..

I find that a bit hard to believe ... maybe I'm wrong but there is no way I wouldn't have a darned good attorney present at all times ... Many have been down that road and it usually does not wind up in their favor ....

Anyway ... good luck to you, I hope it all works out.

Peace
Sam

Guys - come on - feet on the ground here! You are talking about signing a five album deal? That's a big chunk of your musical life - don't sign anything without getting a good lawyer, no matter how many drinks the man from Universal buys for you, no matter how fair he says his company is these days!

Business is business, corporations are all about profits, and you owe it to your creative selves to take a realistic attitude to this major event in your musical careers - get a lawyer on it!!! Don't be fooled by the sweet talking - that's exactly why he's an A+R guy!

Susan,Larry,Sam..We really appreciate your concern-but if you actually met Brad n hung with him you'd realise the deep sincerity he's got..He says Universal is like a big family and we're all their sons n daughters-and parents love their children..
I love my mom n dad too-but my dads never offered me $200,000 to go and make music and party in LA!
So i guess i'll have my real dad and my Universal sugar dad too now..

Why do you need to check with a lawyer if someone's giving you $200,000?
If anyone here wanted to give me that amount of cash-i'd just gratefully accept it.It'd be better giving a chunk of it to charity if you really want to give some of it away, rather than giving it to a lawyer. They're rich enough already.

Brads flying back on monday and wants us to sign before then.He says its a 'statement of intent' or something. He jokes its a statement of our intent to become rich, famous and party hard! haha.Brads always creasing us up with gags like that!

Please do keep us informed .... ya know especially when you get that $200,000 in hand ... and all the other great things coming your way ...

Lawyers are generally worth every penny .... and they don't pretend to be your friend either ....

but some folks do fall into a pile of shit and come up smelling like roses ... maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones ...

Hi Mr Code..Yes its like a strange, amazing dream-we keep pinching ourselves!!!!!

Funny you should mention ring pieces...Bub told me that Brad asked if he wanted to touch his ring piece last night. They were both really drunk, but Bub was still really shocked and told him he definitely didn't....
Bubs been keeping out of the way of Brad today.
I'm really, really hoping Brad dosn't ask me...I definitely don't wanna drink any more witches brews tonight, thats for sure..

A personal congrats to The Attic. I wish you the best in your journey. Hope to see you on tour somewhere. "Happy Faces" is great work. My cousin worked with Universal/Vivendi distribution for his indie movie. The treated him well...He would work with them again. Have they spoken to you about tours or anything like that?

This Brad fellow, he doesn't sound at all like a typical A&R guy. You guys have it made! Don't listen to the naysayers; they're just over the hill and jealous that they haven't been offered a deal as sweet as this.

Love always,
Gremislav

p.s. this is the best thread on the pipeline in as long as I can remember.

Thankyou Sam for your advice but we've just signed! It was quite a few pages long with alot of language we didn't understand but Brad told us the jist of it in a few sentences and waved his hands dismisively saying we needn't be concerned with all the small printed stuff or anything like that.
Anyway it seemed all above board and cool-so we're off to LA next month to start making music and do plenty of partying!

Brads apologised to Bub about the ring peice incident saying he feels really embarassed and that the witches brew always 'brings up the horn' in him or something.Anyway Bubs a little shaken but not too stirred by it and we're just gonna go out for a few beers tonight to celebrate.

Fly on the wall...The Prince Of Tanzanias offer of 3 million Tanzanian Shillings is worth about $2,300 so we've beaten you-and by quite a considerable sum!

Slimdog Productions..No,they havn't discussed tours. The idea is to promote us with guerilla multi-media infestation methods, utilising Universals ownership of so many media outlets.Creating hype and strongly emphasising our proud lofi
credentials.Video, youtube, performance art and selected predetermined happenings designed to shock and open imaginations are the weapons to gnaw our way into the mass consciousness and make us rich.
I can't say too much about specifics-but Brad and the team certainly have alot of exciting ideas!

Massive sweaty long-haul touring on a cramped bus to gain a fanbase is 'old hat' according to Brad-and to be honest we don't really fancy having to work that hard...
Spending our time partying and making $ the easy way seems like alot more fun!

Gremislav-Thankyou for your support and such nice comments!.I didn't realise people were jealous here (maybe they are i don't know). Many temporarily squashed their natural self-concern to vote for us in the underground 40 I know that tho!

The view on the other side of the hill is sedate and comfortable looking peacefully toward the sunset rather than excitedly toward the sun at full brightness..Many here probarbly prefer the tranquil sleepy life-which is fine

"alot of language we didn't understand but Brad told us the jist of it in a few sentences and waved his hands dismisively saying we needn't be concerned with all the small printed stuff or anything like that."

Hmmmm something is just a bit off here friends....seriously....The small print is dangerous! Wow...

There is an outfit called the "Paramount Group" that people mistake for being part of the Paramount pictures company, I have heard they blow smoke up peoples asses all the time, and when it clears their wallets are a lot lighter.

Just a few questions...

Do you guys play live?
Do you have a good following?
Do people fill venues because you are on the Bill?

I think your song Happy faces is a good song, but I don't hear enough to "create a feeding frenzy" Unless you have an energy and a following at Live shows I don't see how anyone would sign you on the strength of the song alone. I am sorry if I am coming off Harsh, or am sounding negative. The fact is there are "sharks" out there who prey on the wide eye ambitions of musicians all the time. Its a business...a dark one.

I am casting a cynical eye not to be critical of you or your band, you have talent for sure. However, things just don;t add up. Please, DO NOT give anyone a PENNY! Signed artists do not pay for anything. If you are asked for money, even a dollar...you are being had. I hope I am wrong.

I wish you all the luck and success in the world, please know this is more of a public service announcement, I do not have all the details of your situation, and I wish you all the best.

Good Luck,

Jeff

Whatever, Jealous Allen Myers....

The small print is small for a reason, i.e., it's not important. "Create a feeding frenzy"? Happy Faces is a feeding frenzy unto itself. Easy money. Any halfway decent A&R guy can hear that from a mile away. Have you gone deaf, Jeff?

You're right though, there are a lot of sharks out there: a lot of jealous, cynical sharks.

Love always,
Gremislav

It seems weird to me not to read the small print. I hope this is the Universal you think it is...I know about Paramount; they sent me letters and Paramount is about getting you to hire them to do a recording for you. When do you get your advance check? I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
