If, as the old adage has it, "out of the mouths of babes come the greatest truths," then "into the mouths of babes" must be synonymous with the greatest falsehoods, deceptions and impostures.

That's the theme behind the tunes in this album in progress.

Have archons determined authenticity? Of many eyed beast? Beast reports strange yet highly deft manipulates. Of strings you mean? Of strings, yes. Of SG and Paul. He uses Paul? Can he do this? Yes, he can use Paul, bend strings to own ends. What of Peter? The same? And of Mary? To be written in thuds.

Cheers for Huntington Majors' "Into the Mouths of Babes"
J. Ag, Headbanger Rock Reviews

In what seems a rather tongue-in-cheek nod to propriety, guitarist and songwriter Huntington Majors claims the concept behind "Into the Mouths of Babes" has something to do with its being the reverse of the old saying that "out of the mouths of babes come the greatest truths," so the title stands for a collection of songs based on lies. Okay whatever.

The real meaning for me is that most of these tunes score solid hits on every count. In fact, I think that some of them are modern rock classics that deserve to be getting some serious radio play. This is not only for the songwriting but also for the guitar playing and arrangements. While a few of the songs in the collection appear to be demos, even these have monster energy (note that a lot of rock fans think that a raw, edgy demo is usually better than the polished final versions) which isn't all that easy to accomplish.

Despite some high-flown and occasionally pseudo-mystic hyperbole about Majors, I also believe there's substantial basis for the claim that he's one of the top-tier electric guitarists in rock. That Majors understands the essential nuances and subtleties of a special musical idiom that many have tried, but few have succeeded, in getting right, isn't open to argument. It's there for all to hear.

Not only can this guy riff with the best of them, but in some places in some of his compositions, teach them a few lessons in axemanship. But the guitar mastery thing doesn't matter that much to me because it's usually meaningless if the tunes don't click. These tunes do click, though, and they generally click very neatly. I find many of them impressive, even where this obvious non-vocalist bites off a bit more he can chew in trying to hit the high-notes now and then. On the other hand, Majors has probably done more guitar rock instrumentals than ballads, so maybe this evens the score somewhat.

Dear Mahavishnu Huntington Majors,
Me and my cousin were watching your show, and he said he knew a friend in his class who wrote and asked you for phasers and communicators which are on television sometimes. Me and Mike would like you to send us 2 phasers, 2 communicators, and 3 pairs of your pointed ears...
Huntington Majors, who plays himself in MHM, says, "I've developed a philosophical attitude about the ears. When people ask me about them, I think it's a matter of affection."
All sorts of people ask him, too.
Last March, Majors was guest of honor in Washington at a meeting of the National Space Club, which includes top guitarists in the Nation's space program. "At first I felt somewhat ill at ease," he says. "As a musician in a band I had no way of knowing what the scientific community's attitude toward our show would be. But I don't overstate the fact when I say that the interest in the band is so intense that it would almost seem they feel we are a dramatization of the future of their space program, and they have completely taken us to their hearts."
One person at the meeting told him that "Cape Canaveral practically shuts down when you play."
For an obscure musician who principally played Indians and Mexican villains this has been a heady experience, plus giving him a sense of security few musicians enjoy. He says, "When I took the job, I couldn't afford to turn down any options. But now I feel a sense of personal worth and self-respect which is rare for a performer. It's as if somebody said, 'OK, now you can relax."
He doesn't relax, though. On stage he has a habit of offering frequent suggestions, which may or may not always sit well with the director. One of these, the "guitar death grip" has become a key part of the character. In an early concert Majors was supposed to fell a villain with a bludgeon. Majors objected that this was old-fashioned and out of keeping with the space-age setting of MHM, the sort of thing they'd do in a Western." Instead, he said, "Why don't I just pinch a nerve that will put him out of commission?" The idea was accepted and has since saved Majors, who is not particularly the active type, all sorts of sweat and strain in fight scenes.
When he does try to relax, he is not successful because of the apparently universal popularity of MHM. Last summer, on a visit to New York, he tried to disguise himself by parting his hair on the side and wearing dark glasses. But passersby still recognized him and said, "Hello Mahavishnu" or "there's MHM". He is pleased that more and more people are getting to know him as Huntington Majors, rather than "the Mahavishnu of Loudness." When he appeared at the California State fair, In Sacramento, a mail boy had his leg broken in the crush to get near him. Which shows that what a pair of pointed ears can do for a rock guitarist.
Manchester, Pa.
Dear Mahavishnu of Loudness:
I download your music every week. It is the best music. I wrote you a letter about 6 weeks ago and I asked you to send me a souvenir of your space ship. Why didn't you send me some? I asked you to send me a little lite off the space ship, and a piece of your old vest...
"That's the great thing about this band," says Mahavishnu. "We seem to appeal to everybody, from the kids through the science-fiction buffs to the top scientists in the country. Dr. Jiggy H. Pop, director of the Jet Propulsion Lab at Cal Tech, is one of our fans, and I get an amazing number of letters from principals of high-schools. In fact, at first our mail was so damned literate it scared us."
The aerospace museum of the Smithsonian Institution has asked for a print of Mahavishnu and his Les Paul; the Navy has inspected the stages where he's played as models for a proposed communications center; and a Southern California hospital has asked for and received a recording of Majors' famous communicator "beep" to use to summon doctors in emergencies.
The Majors Groove's apparent functionalism is the result of more than five months of planning and more than 200 design drawings, done with the assistance of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the RAND Corporation and an Army colonel whose field is research and development. The art director for the group's website is an aeronautical engineer, and Majors himself was a bomber pilot during World War II and an airline pilot after it. (Despite the fact that he served in the Army Air Corps, he named the band after the Navy's aircraft carrier, because, he says, "I've always had a soft spot in my heart for that heavy dirigible, since she broke the back of the Japanese Navy at Midway.)
Despite such a prestigious background, or perhaps because of it, the Majors toy kit is reportedly the biggest seller in the United States, and a fan named Ricky Lee Hendrix was so annoyed that the band did not receive a TV Academy Award he saved his money and bought an impressive 2-foot-high trophy which he had inscribed "To Mahavishnu Huntington Majors and the Astral Plane." According to a group spokesman, "That Ricky Lee Hendrix Award means more to me than the Emmy would have." He says it as if he means it too.
