I was born and raised about 30 miles south of Philadelphia, in a little State called Delaware. My father went to the other side when I was 7 yrs old, leaving my mother to raise me alone. She managed to play both parental roles, and instilled in me a tender balance of strength, and sensitivity. She taught me how to put my thoughts in to written word, which came in handy for dealing with the pain of losing my father.

When I was a teenager, my older brother left me his vinyl collection and a turntable. This led to many reclusive nights in the basement spinning Harvest, Who’s Next, Bridge Over Troubled Water… It was at this point that I discovered exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to make records.

So, come Christmas ’94, my mother and brother pooled together and got me my first guitar, a black Washburn acoustic. I spent day and night teaching myself chords, and it wasn’t long before I was writing songs in the basement. I started a band and spent most of my adolescence obsessing over band practice and gigs, meanwhile neglecting my homework.

As I got older, I developed a strong relationship with my uncle Will who resided in Nashville. He was a songwriter as well, and turned my ear to Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, and a slew of old SUN recordings. As a result, my writing began to improve and my musical horizons broadened.

In 2001 I went broke by investing in a bunch of recording gear, and taught myself the craft. I slowly built up a reputation in the area, and consequently spent the next 6 years recording/producing over 30 different artists of ALL genres. Talk about expanding, I was exposed to, and even producing music I knew nothing about, including hip-hop, hardcore, children’s…

In 2004, I traveled back and forth from Delaware to Nashville to make a record with my uncle Will, which ended up receiving critical acclaim and steady rotation on European National Public Radio.

In late 2006 I decided to follow his footsteps and move to Nashville myself, which is where I currently reside.

About “Necessary Lies”

In between long recording sessions making records with other artists, I was chipping away at this one. I think it’s evident that it comes from many places. For me, this album culminates my experiences of heartache and loneliness, my disgust with the current political landscape, and all the human deception that makes life so damn fragile.
I played a good amount of the instruments, and brought in friends to fill in the gaps and provide a fresh perspective. The entire recording process spanned about 2 years, with a hiatus or two, and a number of rewrites, re-recordings, relapse, etc…

Performing Songwriter Review!

"Our first impression of this independently recorded and released CD was that it was going to get tossed to the side because it would probably sound like a thousand other generic underground artists. First impressions can be deceiving...and we don't mind admitting that we were totally wrong on this one. Although he's a complete unknown at the present time, Carthage, Tennessee's Brett Ryan Stewart is an incredibly talented man who writes some truly killer songs. What surprises us most about these recordings is how incredibly accessible they are. Instead of writing weird and noisy underground pop, Stewart composes classic pop songs that are timeless and surprisingly mature. And the man's voice has to be heard to be believed...what a voice (!). A great deal of time and energy obviously went into recording these tunes. The sound quality is nice and warm...a far cry from much of the overproduced music that clutters our mailbox. We wouldn't be surprised in the least if this guy gets picked up by the Vanguard label. His music would fit right in. Killer tracks include "Yet Again (Politic)," "Finding My Way," "Needle & Spoon," and "Disappear." Quality material from start to finish. (Rating: 5+)"
-babysue.com, LMNOP

"Brett Ryan Stewart is a talented and under appreciated artist originally from Delaware. And there isn't a better time to start the hype about him since he just launched a new music video. In addition, one of his songs is #144 out of 1,855 "Songs of the Times" on Neil Young's website. How wicked cool is that?
We have his older brother and his uncle to thank for his passion of good music. His brother left him a plethora of vinyl records when they were younger. Brett spent many a night by his turntable, building a dream about making his own records while listening to Harvest, Who's Next, Bridge Over Troubled Water... Thanks to his uncle, his music style also reflects a deep respect for the likes of Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen.
Brett Ryan Stewart moved to Nashville in 2006 and his career is unfolding beautifully. Necessary Lies is Brett's first full length album and it is more than just the potential for success. Most singer/songwriters put out a first album in a rush due to their excitement and impatience; not Brett. The album brings with it everything he has to offer as a person. Brett says, "I think it's evident that it comes from many places. For me, this album culminates my experiences of heartache and loneliness, my disgust with the current political landscape, and all the human deception that makes life so damn fragile."

His love for childhood vinyls is evident; and brilliantly so for that matter. This music is good, old-fashioned folk rock with well-timed modern twists and exhilarating rifts."
-Christy Mannering, BRING ME UP: THE SOUND

"Stewart, who fits snugly in the indie folk singer/songwriter mold, has been busy in recent years as a producer and engineer at his Deep Groove Studio in Wilmington, working with bands like Apex Watson and lower case blues.
On his solid full-length debut, Stewart pulls no punches on mixing political commentary with his music.
Which side of the aisle does he lean?
Well, let's just say he gave a shout out to MSNBC's Keith Olbermann in the liner notes.
He says songs about the war, President Bush and the administration naturally came out of him.
"When I'm sitting there reading the paper, it's just anger. I feel a lot better afterward. It's like when you're in fifth grade and you get beat up at school and tell your Mom about it or write about it. It's kind of that kind of relief. Otherwise, it just builds up and I go to the bar and drink and start a fight," he says, laughing.
The centerpiece for his political exorcism comes in the form of the accordion-laced "Face to Face," which includes forceful lines like, "A fistful of green in a Wall Street wet dream couldn't wipe your soul clean."
Even though Stewart isn't a fan of the president, Bush is a great source of material, he says.
"If it wasn't for him, I'd have nothing. I almost don't want him to get impeached because I'd like to get another record out before 2008," he says."
-Ryan Cormier, The News Journal

• 2 BRS Songs ("Yet Again, and "Face to Face") topped the charts on Neil Young’s LIVING WITH WAR TODAY website, holding the 1 & 2 position for nearly a month.
